# How can I connect from a remote server to a CrateDB node using crash?

When using the package-based setup flavor for [Debian or Ubuntu](https://crate.io/docs/crate/tutorials/en/latest/install.html#install-deb) or [Red Hat or CentOS](https://crate.io/docs/crate/tutorials/en/latest/install.html#install-rpm), the CrateDB startup script uses [Environment variables](https://crate.io/docs/crate/reference/en/4.6/config/environment.html#conf-env) from the `/etc/default/crate` file.

or you set it in the console with e.g.

```auto
export CRATE_HEAP_SIZE=4g  

```
